(More customer reviews)This paella burner is a sturdy and well-designed product intended for use outdoors or with paella pans that might be too large for the kitchen stovetop. Paella cooked over one of these burners will cook much more evenly than is possible on any kitchen range, resulting in a superior paella. I also believe that cooking outdoors enhances the final product as well as the communal nature of the paella experience.
I own this model as well as the larger model 500 and use them often. Making paella can be great fun, even addictive, especially when entertaining friends. Guests tend to gather around the paella pan, fascinated by the process of building a wonderful paella one ingredient at a time. While it looks complicated, even difficult to make, it's actually quite easy with practice. After many paella parties, I've become somewhat celebrated, among my friends at least, for my paella panache.
While this burner, as sold, can be used on any flat surface, I recommend the purchase of a set of legs for the unit. There are several types to choose from but for this size burner a simple set of three legs works well. The legs will bring the burner up to a comfortable level for cooking and you can slide the propane tank under it and out of the way. The 300 is sufficient to cook paella for a group of 8 to 10 or so with a 16" or 17" paella pan (I prefer the traditional carbon steel pans). The burner is also very compact to travel with and versatile as well. I've taken it camping when cooking with large fry pans or pots that don't fit well on a standard camp stove. It will cook hot and fast if you need it too.
If you're going to have a burner, you may as well purchase a few other paella-related accessories that will add to the experience. These would include a paella serving spatula and a socarrat scraper which allows you to get at the thin burned layer of rice at the bottom of the paella pan. This is considered a flavorful delicacy by the initiated.
